Secure Dialer Guides

Task-by-task help for setting up Secure Dialer, making a first call, using calling and messaging features, recovering access, and solving common problems.

1. Get ready

  • Use an iPhone with a passcode and a current version of iOS.
  • Have an upgraded Twilio account, a voice-capable Twilio number, its Account SID, and its Auth Token ready.
  • Confirm your Twilio balance, geographic permissions, and any required voice or messaging registrations.
  • Entering 911 offers to continue in the iPhone Phone app. Secure Dialer never routes emergency calls through Twilio, so maintain reliable independent access to emergency services.

2. Connect Twilio and choose your line

  • Continue with your Apple Account to create or restore your Secure Dialer account.
  • Enter your Twilio Account SID and Auth Token, then tap Connect Twilio. Your Auth Token goes directly to Twilio, is cleared from the form, and is never saved by Secure Dialer.
  • Choose the voice-capable Twilio number you want recipients to see.
  • If no number appears, add or configure one in the connected Twilio account, then return and reconnect.

3. Make your first call

  • Open Phone and choose a contact or enter a number.
  • Confirm the destination and business line shown on screen.
  • Use a number you control or have permission to call, then tap Call and allow microphone access when iOS asks.
  • If you enter 911, the call button changes to Call 911 with iPhone. Confirm to continue in the Phone app; Secure Dialer does not contact Twilio or add the call to its history.
  • After connection, confirm both people can hear clearly and end the call in Secure Dialer.
  • Your selected number is sent with the call, but the displayed business name can vary by recipient, carrier, and caller-name registration.

4. Use call controls

  • Mute stops or resumes your microphone; Audio selects iPhone, speaker, or an available Bluetooth device.
  • Keypad sends digits for extensions and automated menus; Hold pauses the conversation without ending it.
  • During an outgoing connected call, Add caller can reach one additional participant. Speak privately, then merge the calls.
  • When leaving a three-way call, choose whether the other callers continue or everyone disconnects.

5. Send messages and review voicemail

  • Open Messages, tap New, choose a contact or enter a number, write the message, and review the recipient before sending.
  • SMS, MMS, and WhatsApp availability depends on your Twilio number, sender, registration, and the active service window.
  • Open Recents and choose Voicemail to stream audio from Twilio and view a transcript when available.
  • Deleting in Secure Dialer does not override every Twilio-side retention setting.

6. Recover access and manage devices

  • Open Settings, then Account & recovery. Link your Apple Account and save the recovery code somewhere private outside this iPhone.
  • On a replacement iPhone, use the same Apple Account or choose Recovery code during setup.
  • Review enrolled iPhones and revoke any lost, sold, or unfamiliar device.

7. Manage your App Store subscription

  • Open Settings, then Plan to see the current access state.
  • Use Restore Purchases after reinstalling or when a purchase made with the same Apple Account is missing.
  • Use Manage subscription to change or cancel through Apple.
  • Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription or remove Twilio-side data.

8. Fix common problems

  • Confirm the iPhone has data access and microphone permission, and that the selected Twilio number and account remain active and funded.
  • Review geographic permissions, spending controls, and any voice, A2P messaging, WhatsApp, or caller-name registration needed for the feature.
  • In Secure Dialer, open Settings, Help & diagnostics, and Troubleshoot recent calls.
  • Create a privacy-safe support summary before contacting support. Never send an Auth Token, API-key secret, recovery code, Apple transaction payload, or private message content.

9. Disconnect securely

  • Save anything you need, then open Settings and Twilio connection.
  • Use secure disconnect only when you intend to remove the Secure Dialer connection and its dedicated Twilio resources.
  • Manage or cancel the App Store subscription separately through Apple.
